Origins
Thanksgiving originated with the Pilgrims and Native Americans in the US in 1621. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days.
The Turkey
There’s no written record of turkey being eaten at the first Thanksgiving, but experts believe a wild bird like turkey, duck, or goose was served.
Football
Watching football is a popular Thanksgiving tradition in the US. The tradition of playing games on Thanksgiving Day dates back to 1876, shortly after the game was invented.
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was the only president to refuse to name Thanksgiving an official national holiday, likely because he believed in the separation of church and state.
The Pilgrims’ name
The Pilgrims didn’t call themselves Pilgrims. William Bradford used the term to describe them as travelers on a religious mission. The Pilgrims called themselves the Saints, First Comers, Ancient Brethren, or Ancient Men.
The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line
Butterball has had a Turkey Talk-Line for nearly 40 years to help people with turkey cooking questions.
The average Thanksgiving meal
The average Thanksgiving meal has 3,000 calories and 160 grams of fat.
Turkey doesn’t make you sleepy
The myth that turkey makes you sleepy is untrue. Turkey doesn’t have more tryptophan than other types of poultry.
