MILWAUKEE, WI – The Wisconsin Center for Nursing is pleased to announce the 2018-2040 Wisconsin Registered Nurse Supply and Demand Forecasts Results Report, released by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The report reviews trends seen in the Wisconsin nursing workforce since the first registered nurse (RN) survey was administered in 2010 and provides an update of previous modeling work. The 2018-2040 forecast results provide guidance on what to expect going forward.

Key Findings:

  • RNs make up the largest profession in the healthcare industry. This is significant, as the

RN workforce provides a strong barometer for the challenges facing the healthcare workforce as a whole. Secondly, the size of the profession means that maintaining a strong nursing workforce is essential for providing quality healthcare.

  • Shifting population demographics place a unique set of challenges on the nursing workforce; an aging population requires healthcare services at much higher rates. According to the Wisconsin Department of Administration projections, the population aged 65 and older is expected to grow by 44% over the next two decades.
  • Although at the moment, supply roughly keeps up with demand, it is more than likely that RN supply growth will begin to flatten.
  • Maintaining a strong RN workforce will require continued and expanded efforts around workforce planning.
