Welcome to the Wisconsin Center for Nursing

The Wisconsin Center for Nursing (WCN) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that was created in 2006 to engage nurse and healthcare organizations, public and private academic programs, government agencies, and related service providers to work together as collaborative partners in an effort to ensure an adequate, competent and diverse nursing workforce for the people of Wisconsin. Our mission is to critically assess and monitor nursing workforce and education trends and promote nursing career pathways with a focus on under-represented groups and leadership development.

Now accepting nominations! Each year we honor area nurses who have demonstrated unselfish devotion to their patients.


In conjunction with the Wisconsin Nurses Association, our annual special section will feature outstanding nurses for their talents and care for our community.

Submit a nomination that describes how your nurse:

  • Exceeds patient expectations
  • Is compassionate and caring
  • Is dedicated to upholding standards of professionalism
  • Makes a difference on a personal level for you and your family

Selected entries will be published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay Press Gazette and Appleton Post-Crescent in a special section online and in print on Sunday, May 4th.

Submissions due by March 31st.

For Women’s History Month, WCN honors

Linda D. Scott, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FADLN, FNAP, FAAN

Dr. Linda Scott is the dean of the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Nursing. She was appointed the eighth dean of the School in July 2016, and she provides direction and leadership in educating nurses for the future of care, strengthening the School’s research enterprise, and forging partnerships to improve health outcomes. As a leading scholar in sleep and health services research, her research on workforce issues has influenced the direction of health policy formation as the nation struggles to provide patient-centered, quality health care amidst a significant nursing workforce shortage. Dr. Scott has also led diversity efforts across academic degrees and curricula, such as the implementation of holistic admissions review and a strategy to enhance the diversity of the nursing workforce and improve patient outcomes by having a nursing profession that mirrors the populations in which it serves.

The AHA Next Generation Leaders Fellowship focuses on developing leaders and empowering them to bring about real and lasting change in the hospital and health systems in which they serve. Largest gathering of APRNs in the Midwest – Education for APRNs planned by APRNs!  April 10-11, 2025

This intensive in-person two-day conference will review current and identify new evidence-based pharmacologic and clinical approaches to the management of common conditions in primary and acute care, with the goals of safe prescribing practice and optimal therapeutic outcomes.
Conference Outcomes: By participating in the sessions offered at the conference most applicable to their professional learning needs, participants will be able to:

  • Apply leadership and advocacy skills to improve collaborative partnerships at the local, state, and national level to ensure that APRNs can practice to the fullest extent of their scope of practice.

The conference planning committee invites you to develop and submit an abstract to be considered for poster presentation at the WLN Spring Conference, April 12, 2025 at Holiday Inn Eau Claire South in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  All accepted posters will be published on the WLN website.  If you are unable to attend the conference in person, you may opt to present your poster virtually.  See Submission Guidelines and FAQs at the end of this document for all submission and presentation details.

Facts about Women’s History Month

• Origins: The month of March has been celebrated as Women’s History Month in the United States since 1987.The month of March has been celebrated as Women’s History Month in the United States since 1987.

• Roots: The origins of Women’s History Month can be traced back to 1857, when women protested poor working conditions in New York City.

• Local Beginnings: The first Women’s History Week was celebrated in Sonoma County, California in 1978.

• Federal Recognition: Congress established Women’s History Week in 1981, and expanded it to a month in 1987.

• Annual Observance: Each year, Congress passes a resolution and the president issues a proclamation to designate March as Women’s History Month.

• International Women’s Day: International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8. The United Nations began celebrating March 8 as International Women’s Day in 1975.

• Theme: The theme for Women’s History Month in 2024 was “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion”.

 • Purpose: Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate women’s contributions to society, culture, and history. It’s also a time to acknowledge women’s struggles and renew commitments to gender equality.
