American Nurses Association Receives 2024 Power of Associations Silver Award for End Nurse Abuse Campaign
Prompted by increasing incidents of violence in healthcare settings, the program aimed to improve safety through legislative, regulatory, and community-driven strategies.
SILVER SPRING, MD – The American Nurses Association (ANA) has been recognized as a Power of Associations Silver Award winner by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for its successful End Nurse Abuse advocacy program to tackle workplace violence against health care workers.
ANA was recognized for its End Nurse Abuse initiative for demonstrating the profound capability of associations to mobilize resources and expertise to address urgent societal issues. The program showcases how associations can lead change, influence public policy, and improve industry standards effectively.
“Congratulations to the American Nurses Association for exemplifying the impact associations have on the industries and professions they represent, and on society at large,” said ASAE President and CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE. “It’s always so incredibly satisfying to see associations going above and beyond their everyday mission to change the world. We’re very proud to spotlight this award-winning initiative.”
“Studies show that one in four nurses have been abused in the workplace, and only 12% reported their incident. The escalating problem of workplace violence in health care affects both the safety of health care workers and the overall quality of patient care,” said ANA President Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. “Awareness is the first step to spark important conversations and pave the way to meaningful solutions. I am proud of the work we have done to protect health care workers and their patients. Our work is far from over, but I see hope in the power of nurses and our mission to one day End Nurse Abuse.”
Efforts of the campaign have led to improved legal protections for nurses, the formulation of comprehensive violence prevention plans, and heightened awareness and education about workplace safety in health care.
